Understanding Creative Status

What each creative status means, the two filters to run before launch, and why artwork gets rejected.

Written by Zachary Cuva

Every booked unit carries a creative status, tracking where its artwork has got to. You can filter your campaign by it, which makes it the quickest way to see what still needs doing.

The Statuses

Status

Meaning

Your move

Missing

No artwork supplied yet.

Upload it, urgently if the deadline is close.

Uploaded

Artwork is in, not yet approved.

Nothing, unless it stays here as the deadline approaches.

Pending Approval

Awaiting a decision.

Chase if the artwork deadline is near.

Approved

Cleared to run.

Nothing. This is where you want everything before launch.

Rejected

Not accepted as supplied.

Deal with immediately — a rejected unit will not run.

The Two Filters That Matter

Before a campaign launches, these are the checks to run:

  1. Filter to Rejected. Should be empty. Anything here will not run unless you fix it.

  2. Filter to Missing. Cross-reference against Design Asset Due Date to see what is genuinely late rather than simply not done yet.

*Note: Rejected is the status to treat as an emergency. Missing artwork is a task; rejected artwork means a unit you have paid for is heading towards running blank.

Why Artwork Gets Rejected

Usually one of:

  • Wrong dimensions for that unit.

  • Resolution too low for the size being printed.

  • Content restrictions on the site — some locations restrict categories or imagery.

  • Missing bleed or safe area required by the media owner's specification.

Check the unit's specification and any spec sheet before re-supplying, so the second attempt is not rejected for the same reason.
